The Massachusetts couple who won the lottery this week originally threw their scratch-off ticket away. When, on a whim, they realized their mistake and dug through the trash to retrieve it, they were in for a million dollar surprise.
Joseph and Joanne Zagami of North Attleborough, Massachusetts told Good Morning America that they were in dire need of the money.
"We've gone through death, we're going through a wedding, we're going through a child being born," the couple explained. They also recently had to cancel a planned vacation very last minute when their refrigerator broke.
As the couple dejectedly unpacked their vacation bags, Joseph asked his wife where the lottery tickets were he had picked up earlier. After he realized he had tossed them with the grocery bags, he dug them out of the trash.
"I scratched the ticket, ran into the bedroom, and woke Joanne up," Joseph recalled. "She looked at it and said, 'Oh my god! Wow!'"
According to The Associated Press, the couple will use their winnings to pay off their mortgage and other bills before going on their previously abandoned vacation.
