This week on Necessary Roughness, Conner has given Dani one of her hardest clients yet - a famous author whose gone agoraphobic since the deadline for his latest novel passed nine months ago. Through Dani’s struggle with William Glass, she’s having nightmares about her previous client - the FBI-wanted V3 accountant who committed suicide instead of coming out to the FBI himself. Dani believes she’s being haunted by the late accountant’s ghost.
Meanwhile, Terrence is having serious career trouble. He missed the curfew the Coach Wizinski gave him the night before the most recent game - and the only reason Coach Wizinski knows that is because a sex tape of Terrence and Sheera was made public from that night. Now, because Coach Wizinski already gave him one chance, Terrence is being traded from the Hawks and being moved to Buffalo, the bottom ranking team in the leagues. Terrence’s career as a football player is doomed - unless Conner can arrange something with Coach Wizinski.
While all of this is going on, Troy and Paloma are continuing their tryst - Paloma, seemingly for companionship, and Troy because he wants to get Paloma to snoop around Dani’s office for him to get more information on the late accountant and his wrongdoings.
After Dani and Glass visit an old comic shop Glass used to work at for inspiration, Dani finds out Glass has maxed out his credit card - one that has a $500,000 limit per month. So, on top of the agoraphobia, Glass has a shopping problem. He says, maybe he’s a shopaholic, too! “One more thing and we can have a trifecta!” But Dani doesn’t think that’s the case - she knows he’s doing anything to avoid writing - and why? “Because it’s the end,” Glass says, and writing the end of the story is like saying goodbye to all of the characters he’s known and loved for eight years, through the books and the movies.
Terrence is still in danger of being trade, which is why Conner is meeting with the Buffalo coach to arrange anything he can to get him uninterested in Terrence. On the way out of their vehicle, Terrence and Sheera run into a group of paparazzis who catch part of their conversation and start badgering them with questions about the trade and a new show Sheera might be hosting. Terrence gets mad and tells them to stop talking about the woman he loves, to which they respond with questions of marriage.
While Dani was out of her office, Paloma managed to snatch the USB drive the late accountant left Dani with all of the evidence. Just before leaving, Paloma finds Troy sweet talking another employee. She decides not to give the USB to Troy and instead returns it to a shaken Dani who’s run back to her office in search of it. That night Dani gives the USB to Nico because she’s afraid she’ll lose it herself now.
The next day, Glass shows up at Dani’s office with 75 pages written of his new novel - but not the one he needs to get done, which is what Dani needed him to write. He wants the two main characters to stay together forever, and Dani thinks it’s as simple as writing whatever ending Glass wants for them, but it isn’t. He doesn’t think he can write it - he doesn’t think he can do the story justice - so he isn’t.
Terrence and Sheera, between Sheera’s phone blowing up with new opportunities, have fallen in love. Meanwhile, Conner is still doing everything he can to make Coach Wizinski not trade Terrence off to another team. That night, Terrence asks Sheera if she planted the camera to record them having sex. Sheera stammered about empires and famous couples - but Terrence didn’t hear a no. After finally getting it out of her, Terrence shows Sheera the door.
After going through the series, Dani finds something out about Glass. Turns out, he started writing in the first place because the main female character in his series is based on a real person, a woman he fell in love with in high school. Dani believes Glass has avoidant personality disorder - where someone avoids intimate relationships at any cost for fear of rejection. Glass has turned to fantasy to escape reality.
Paloma, frustrated about being pushed into betraying her friend and boss, breaks it off with Troy, who then threatens that she’s not “on the fast track” at V3.
Nico and Dani are finally able to get into the USB and find a list of charities V3’s foundation was donating to - one of which they’d never heard of before, in the Cayman Islands. The late accountant wasn’t just stealing money - he was moving it there for someone else.
The late accountant’s ghost comes back in her dreams to thank her for not giving up on him even though he gave up on himself.
Conner wasn’t able to keep Terrence on the Hawks, but instead moves him to New Jersey, where his first coach, Coach Purnell, now works.
