NPR journalist, Scott Simon, has been sharing his dying mother’s last moments on earth as he comforts her at her bedside in Chicago. He’s been praised for his thoughtful wording and documenting the remaining time he has with her.
Well wishers have replied to Simon by the dozen, admiring the way he’s handling this difficult time.
“My mother now wakes only to be gracious. "Is Reggie or Don on-duty? They're both such exquisite gentlemen." (and they are),” he wrote on July 28.
“I love holding my mother's hand. Haven't held it like this since I was 9. Why did I stop? I thought it unmanly? What crap,” he also wrote, to which one Twitter user replied, “thank you for sharing this with us. What a beauty your mother is. I only pray for peace for her & your family.”
When she asked for my help last night, we locked eyes. She calmed down. A look of love that surpasses understanding.

Listening to Nat & Natalie sing Unforgettable. Mother & I sang it just two nights ago. Coles have better voices for sure.

The Telegraph reports that his final tweets on Monday indicate that his mother had passed away.
“The heavens over Chicago have opened and Patricia Lyons Simon Newman has stepped onstage,” he wrote, adding, “She will make the face of heaven shine so fine that all the world will be in love with night. Thank you for all yr warm wishes and prayers. Such love drives the world.”
