For over two decades of his life, director Peter Jackson has had one thing on his mind - J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. OK, he has done some things in between Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, but Jackson’s work to bring Tolkien’s world to life will be what his name will go down for in the film history books. Jackson finally closed that period, wrapping filming on his Hobbit adaptation, which turned into a trilogy.
Jackson has been keeping fans up to date on the trilogy’s progress on Facebook and on Friday, the Oscar winner wrote the production was over.
According to The Associated Press, Jackson has been posting photos of the production since day one, sharing images of Martin Freeman, who plays Bilbo Baggins, and the rest of the cast and crew working in New Zealand. The updates ended Friday with a post of Jackson with his cat. “A long day. A great day. Thank you all for being part of it! Now for some sleep!” he wrote.
In a previous post, he said that they were just finishing the final shot. “Smiles and happiness... And sadness. Yikes, very sad,” he wrote.
Jackson won his Oscars for The Return of the King, the final film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In December 2012, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released, grossing $1 billion worldwide and starting the new trilogy. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be out on Dec. 13, while There And Back Again will be out on Dec. 14, 2014.
