Opera star Placido Domingo is in a Madrid hospital as he is being treated for a serious blood clot. Domingo, who is expected to fully recover, has had to cancel two shows.
His publicist confirmed the news Tuesday, reports CNN. The 72-year-old was taken to the hospital Monday “where he is being successfully treated for a pulmonary embolism resulting from a deep vein thrombosis,” publicist Nancy Seltzer said.
Seltzer added, “Maestro Domingo is expected to make a full recovery.”
He has been ordered by doctors to rest for three or four weeks, so performances next week in Madrid have also been cancelled. “His exact return to his performing engagements remains subject to how fast he can heal and regain his characteristic strength,” Seltzer’s statement added.
According to CBS News, Domingo had colon cancer surgery in 2010 and returned to the stage only 45 days after the operation. He has never stopped touring or considered retirement.
“I feel strong still,” he said in a CBS Sunday Morning interview in December. “But you know, I mean, you never know how much more time you will have the voice. That's the first thing. But secondly, how the health will be and how is the strength.”
Domingo remains one of the most popular opera figures in the world, taking over 140 roles in his career. He’s the new U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization goodwill ambassador, a title he earned for helping to spread a love for classical music.
