The health of country music star Randy Travis took a turn for the worse late Wednesday night, just hours after his doctors after his doctors gave a positive update on his health.

Publicist Kirt Webster said in a statement that he did suffer a stroke as a “complication” of congestive heart failure. The singer, 54, is still listed in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery to “relieve pressure on his brain.”

The statement offered no further information, Webster did add, “His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support.”

The news comes just hours after his doctors at the Baylor Health Care System in Texas said that he was showing “signs of improvement,” although he was still in critical condition.

Travis, who had been putting his life back together after multiple public intoxication arrests last year, has been in the hospital since Sunday afternoon for treatment of viral cardiomyopathy. It is a viral illness that could lead to heart failure.

Country stars are still sharing their thoughts on Travis and the impact he has had on their careers. In a tweet, Carrie Underwood wrote, “Thinking about my friend, @randytravis, tonight. Hope he gets better soon...”
