The National Transportation Safety Board is issuing an apology after a summer intern read a list of names intended to poke fun of Asian crew members aboard Asian flight 214, the flight which crash landed one week ago at San Francisco International Airport.
The racist names were aired and posted during the noon broadcast of KTVU-TV, Boston.com reports.
The SF Gate reports that during the broadcast, Tori Cambell stated, “KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots who were on board.” She then began reading the list of names from the teleprompter as a graphic splashed across the television.
“Captain Sum Ting Wong,” Cambell began. “Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, Bang Ding Ow,” read the others.
The NTSB has since released a statement saying, “The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.”
The NTSB continued, noting that the intern “acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft,” adding that the “NTSB does not release or confirm names of crewmembers or people involved."
KTVU general manager Tom Raponi later added, “We are reviewing our procedures to ensure this type of error does not happen again.”
