Adnan Rasheed wrote a letter to shooting victim Malala Yousafzai after her speech to the United Nations to apologize for not warning her of the impending attack.
"I wished it would never happened [sic] and I had advised you before," he wrote and quoted in The Guardian.
Malala and two of her classmates were intentionally targeted by gunmen last year. Malala went to Britain to receive medical care for her injuries. She and her family now live in Britain.
In the letter, Rasheed said that he wants Malala to return to Pakistan, join a seminary, and advocate for Islam. He claims that the Taliban targeted Malala because she was “smearing” them. He did not apologize for what happened.
According to NBC News, Rasheed said, "Let's leave it to Allah almighty," adding, "He is the best judge."
Rasheed claims that the Taliban attack schools because the army and paramilitary groups use schools as hiding places. He also claims that Malala was not targeted because she advocates for education.
"Nobody will believe a word the Taliban say about the right of girls like Malala to go to school until they stop burning down schools and stop massacring pupils," U.N. envoy Gordon Brown told The Guardian.
