Toshi-Aline Ohta Seeger, the beloved wife of folk singer Pete Seeger, passed away at age 91 in the couple’s home in Beacon, NY on July 9.

Toshi was born in Munich, but soon after her birth, her American mother and Japanese father moved to New York, which is where she grew up and eventually met her future husband Pete. Toshi and Pete married when she was 21 years old on July 20, 1943, according to the . The couple had three children together and were married for almost 70 years when she passed away.
Although she never became as famous as her husband, Toshi was an activist who helped put together the Great Hudson River Revival fundraiser and musical festival, according to Rolling Stone. As well her own accomplishments, Toshi provided immense support to her husband during his career. Sing Out, a magazine which the couple cofounded together, said in her obituary that without Toshi, Pete would not have had the reinforcement and inspiration that helped him to become the music legend he is.
