Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, has responded to the interview the last George Zimmerman juror gave to ABC News on Thursday. In the interview, the juror said that Zimmerman ‘got away with murder,’ a comment Fulton said was “devastating” to hear.
In a statement released by the Trayvon Martin Foundation, Fulton said, “It is devastating for my family to hear the comments from juror B29, comments which we already knew in our hearts to be true. That George Zimmerman literally got away with murder,” reports ABC News.
Fulton added, “This new information challenges our nation once again to do everything we can to make sure that this never happens to another child.”
According to The LA Times, Fulton also explained why they created the foundation in her late 17-year-old son’s name. It was created “to try and take something very painful and negative and turn it into something positive as a legacy to our son.”
Juror B29, who told ABC News that her first name is Maddy and was the only minority on the six-member panel, was interviewed by Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts. The interview aired last night and again on GMA this morning.
Juror B29 explained that she believed Zimmerman was guilty in her heart, but the prosecution just didn’t provide the evidence to convict. “You can't put the man in jail even though in our hearts we felt he was guilty. But we had to grab our hearts and put it aside and look at the evidence,” she said.
She also said that she felt she needed to apologize to Martin’s parents because she feels “like I let them down.”
Zimmerman was found not guilty by a jury of six women.
