Peter Bogdanovich is hoping to make a comeback as a director with Squirrels to the Nuts, which counts Wes Anderson as one of its producers and stars Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson already. The cast has grown significantly, with Will Forte, Imogen Poots and Tatum O’Neal all reportedly joining.
The film has had a busy week, with TheWrap reporting Monday that Poots was replacing Brie Larson, who was attached to the film when it was first announced in February. Poots will take one of the leading roles as a prostitute who goes to Broadway after a married director, played by Owen Wilson, falls in love with her. Aniston is her therapist and Cybill Shepherd and Richard Lewis are her parents.
On Wednesday, TheWrap confirmed that O’Neal had signed on to reunite with her Paper Moon and Nickelodeon director. O’Neal won an Oscar for Paper Moon and was only 10-years-old at the time. Joanna Lumley and Debi Mazar also joined.
The Hollywood Reporter has also confirmed that Forte is joining. He recently worked with Aniston on Life of Crime, which is the closing film of the Toronto Film Festival this year.
Squirrels, also known as She’s Funny That Way, started filming in New York recently. Lagniappe is financing with Anderson, Noah Baumbach, Holly Wiersma, Logan Levy and George Drakoulias as producers. Red Granite is doing international sales.
Bogdanovich is best known for a string of acclaimed films in the early 1970s, including The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon and What’s Up Doc?.
