Fifty Shades of Grey readers know who is writing and directing the film, but with only a year to go before its release, there is still no official word on who is playing Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. The latest rumors linked The Social Network’s Dakota Johnson and Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam to the roles.
Johnson is a contender for the part of Anastasia, the young college girl who starts a relationship with the billionaire Grey, TheWrap reported on Tuesday. The actress, 23, is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and had a memorable scene with Justin Timberlake in David Fincher’s The Social Network. More recently, she was the Kate in Fox’s short-lived Ben & Kate sitcom.
Meanwhile, Twitch reported that Hunnam, who also starred in this summer’s Pacific Rim, was being considered for Christian. But sources for Variety stress that he is only on the list of contenders and nothing is set in stone yet.
Other actors like Ian Sommerhalder and Garrett Hedlund have said that they turned down the offers to play Christian.
Fifty Shades is scheduled for release on Aug. 1, 2014, so Universal Studios has to get casting set soon. TheWrap notes that an announcement should come after Labor Day. Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) is directing with a script from Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks).
