Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park marked its 20th anniversary this year with a 3D re-release and now Universal can also celebrate the film reaching $1 billion worldwide. The film was just re-released in China in 3D with big numbers.
Jurassic Park, which was first released in 1993, grossed $6.3 million in China during after opening at 2,500 locations, notes The Los Angeles Times. That puts it at No. 1 in the country, where 3D re-releases of older films have been huge hits. In 2012, Titanic 3D grossed $11.2 million on its opening weekend and made $150.2 million during its run.
JP’s opening in China was the fourth-biggest opening day there this year. Iron Man 3, which had an exclusive cut for Chinese audiences, grossed $19.1 million on opening day.
According to TheWrap, the 3D version of JP has grossed $65 million since it debuted domestically in April. The film originally grossed $970 million worldwide in 1993 and held the record as the highest-grossing film of all time until Titanic.
If you include the 3D re-release, it has reached $1.03 billion worldwide.
JP was followed by 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park III. Colin Trevorrow is currently working on a fourth film for Universal and recently spoke to IGN about the film.
“This is not a paycheck gig for me,” the Safety Not Guaranteed director told the site. “And it’s not the movie that I’m making so that I can make the movies that I really want to make. I actually want to make a kick-ass Jurassic Park movie.”
