Director J.J. Abrams will be bringing at least one major member of his Star Trek team to Star Wars: Episode VII. According to a report, Abrams has hired cinematographer Dan Mindel to work with him in the galaxy far, far away.
The news was first reported by the Star Wars fan site Boba Fett Fan Club, which happened to have a writer at the ASC Breakfast with Dan Mindel event at the ASC Club House on Thursday. There, Mindel spoke to Kodak representative Lorette Bayle, and confirmed that he is working on the new Star Wars film.
Even more interesting is the fact that Mindel let it spill that Episode VII will be shot on 35mm film using Kodak film stock 5219, rather than digital cameras. The last two Star Wars prequels were both shot with digital cameras, so film hasn’t been used to make a Star Wars movie since 1999’s The Phantom Menace.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently said that the new film will rely less on CGI effects, so that will add to a more organic feel to the new films.
According to TheWrap, Mindel and Abrams have been working together since Mission: Impossible III and made both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness together. Mindel’s other recent credits include John Carter and Savages. He is currently working with Marc Webb on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Star Wars: Episode VII is still slated for release sometime in 2015. No casting has been confirmed yet.
