Critics may have liked J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, but only because they didn’t know what Star Trek is really about, at least that’s how Trekkies see it. They called the new movie the worst film in the franchise, even worse than the hilarious Galaxy Quest parody, which isn’t even part of the franchise.
Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci went to the annual Star Trekconvention in Las Vegas this weekend, where fans held a poll to rank all 12 official Trek movies and threw in Galaxy Quest for a laugh.
William Shatner’s Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is usually considered the worst Trek film and it is still pretty awful, but the crowd decided that Into Darkness was much worse.
Faraci wrote that there was also a large group of fans who believed that 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the worst of them all, but the film managed to reach the ninth spot.
As for Abrams’ first Trek film, the 2009 reboot placed number six, but Faraci noted that one fan who had the microphone didn’t even want to consider Abrams’ films. Many feel that they are just too action-oriented for a franchise that has relied on politics and the relationships between characters to move plots. (And let's not forget the poinitless Alice Eve underwear shot.)
But as The Huffington Post notes, Into Darkness was a big hit with audiences, grossing $226 million in North America. The 2009 film made $257 million, so like it or not, Trekkies will still have to deal with Abrams’ vision of the Trek universe for a while longer.
So which film took No. 1? Well, obviously, it was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Galaxy Quest was named the seventh best Trek movie, even though it's not one.
