Lee Daniels’ The Butler won the box office this weekend for a second weekend in a row, holding off new wide releases that just couldn’t connect with audiences. The Jennifer Aniston comedy We’re The Millers also continues to beat expectations, holing the second position.
The Butler took in another $17 million this weekend, a 31 percent drop from last weekend’s $25 million opening, notes Entertainment Weekly. While it’s not going to be a Help-style smash hit, the $30 million film could have a shot at $100 million by the time it finishes its run.
We’re The Millers fell 25 percent to $13.5 million, reports Box Office Mojo. The film has held the No. 2 spot for three straight weekends and is up to $91.7 million already.
In third was The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which made $9.3 million over the weekend and just $14.1 million since its Wednesday opening. This is the latest in a string of Twilight-copy flops, but at least Sony is only distributing the film. It cost German studio Constantin $60 million to make and the company is already shooting the sequel next month. They might want to put the brakes on that, though.
The World’s End with Simon Pegg grossed $8.9 million, meaning that fans of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz turned out in force to see the British comedy.
Disney’s Planes added $8.6 million and is already up to $59.6 million. That’s pretty nice for what was originally supposed to be a direct-to-video movie.
Horror film You’re Next only made $7 million, while Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine grossed $4.3 million at 1,283 locations.
