Megan Welter, the Arizona Cardinals cheerleader who was celebrated by the team earlier this week for also being an Iraq War veteran, was arrested for allegedly beating her boyfriend over a text he sent to his ex-girlfriend.

According to Phoenix station ABC 15, police had responded to a call at a Scottsdale, Arizona home for a reported family dispute. They arrived to find Welter, 29, who appeared to be drunk and had “difficulty describing the events in chronological order,” according to the police report.

The boyfriend had video of the incident, which was obtained by Right This Minute, and Welter admitted that she had punched him. She said that he had picked her up and thrown her onto the patio before locking the door. Welter also claimed that he choked her, but the boyfriend said he never “hit, pushed or assaulted Welter.”

Welter reportedly told police that the fight started after a night of drinking and when they woke up at home, she found a text message on the boyfriend’s phone he sent to an old flame. She grew angry and then started going after the boyfriend by pulling his hair. She said that they’d been dating for six months and she was pregnant, but decided to get an abortion, despite his objections.

Police didn’t find any evidence that she had been choked by the boyfriend.

Welter had been the cause of celebration earlier this week, getting publicity after the Cardinals decided to tell her story. According to Fox Sports, after she graduated college in 2007, she decided to enroll in Officer Training and served 16 months in Iraq. When she returned home, she joined the NFL team’s cheerleading squad.
