Prescott, Arizona officials has denied death benefits to Juliann Ashcraft, the widow of fallen firefighter Andrew Ashcraft.
Andrew and several other Granite Mountain Hotshots died on June 30 while they were fighting an enormous wildfire.
Juliann will receive workman’s compensation and a one-time payment of $328,000 from the federal government. This figure falls far short of the millions of dollars in a lifetime salary and health benefits that she expected to receive.
“As shocked as I was that my husband went to work and never came home, I’m equally shocked in how the city has treated our family since then,” Juliann told the New York Daily News .
The city claims that she does not qualify to receive these benefits because Andrew was a seasonal employee, despite the fact that he worked full time.
Only six families will receive survivor benefits from the city.
"Quite literally, my bills are being paid by the good people of the world who are giving donations, because the city of Prescott isn't doing anything for us," Juliann told CBS News . "Now I have four kids and myself, and I don't know what I'm going to do."
Juliann may sue the city for the benefits.
