In the moments after Warner Bros. announced that Ben Affleck is going to play Batman in the Man of Steel sequel, social media literally exploded. The immediate response was mostly negative, even though no one will really know how well Affleck will do until July 17, 2015. Still, there’s already been petitions created trying to get the studio to reconsider.

The most popular Change.org petition has gained over 10,000 signatures and plenty of comments from people who can’t see anyone other than Christan Bale as Batman. (Clearly, these people missed the part where Bale said he’s really done with the role.)

This petition also brought attention to his performance in Daredevil, suggesting that if he can doom that character, he can ruin Batman too.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, social media tracker Fizzology says that 71 percent of the 96,000 Tweets sent in the hour after Warner made the announcement were negative. Three percent of the negative comments even brought up Gigli.

Meanwhile, TheWrap points out that someone actually posted a mass suicide event for next summer, which is beyong scary.

We won’t know how Affleck will do as Batman until director Zack Snyder’s movie comes out in three years. That's plenty of time to get used to the idea.
