L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz stories are timeless and have provided Hollywood with countless ways to take us to the land of munchkins, good witches, bad witches and the Yellow Brick Road. Audiences have flocked to see these stories and they keep getting made in new ways. It certainly helps that it’s all in the public domain.

The newest project is a series that CBS is developing that puts a whole new spin on it - a medical drama set in the land of Oz.

Deadline reported Thursday that CBS is working on Dorothy, a new project from Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman, the executive producers for the hit Elementary. They successfully brought Sherlock Holmes to modern New York, so now they’re looking to bring Baum’s Wizard of Oz characters to the medical field in NYC.

Ghost Whisperer’s Emily Fox is writing the script and the project comes from CBS TV Studios.

SyFy is also working on its own Oz-inspired series that is set in a post-apocalyptic Oz. Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer) is developing that project.

Disney is also looking to make an Oz: The Great and Powerful sequel, especially after the film made $490 million worldwide.

And, let’s not forget 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, which is heading back to theaters in IMAX 3D next month.
