While we won’t get to see Bradley Cooper being directed by Steven Spielberg anytime soon, he could be directed by another Oscar winning director, Clint Eastwood. The Hollywood legend is reportedly in talks to direct Cooper in American Sniper.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Eastwood is in the early stages of negotiations with Warner Bros., the studio handling the project. Cooper will star and has signed on to produce.
It looks like Warner Bros. wants to get this film done as soon as possible, since Deadline reports that the studio is fast-tracking production. After all, it was just two weeks ago that Spielberg dropped out of the project, citing budget concerns. He also withdrew his Dreamworks from the project, a move that will save Warner Bros. money.
THR notes that if Eastwood - a two-time Best Director Oscar winner - does sign on, he’ll have to make this film before he can get moving on his Jersey Boys adaptation. Since Cooper has several other commitments already, Sniper will have to start filming in the first quarter of 2014.
That shouldn’t be a problem for Eastwood, who makes his films quickly. He directed seven movies between 2006 and 2011.
Sniper will be based on American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, the autobiography of the late former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. He was killed in February at a shooting range by a troubled veteran.
