Actor Danny DeVito was seen during Monday’s Los Angeles Dodger victory against the Mets.
After infielder Nick Punto hit a homerun in the seventh inning, cameras showed Punto high fiving DeVito in the stands. When the game was over DeVito, who was wearing Punto’s #7 Dodgers baseball jersey joined the infielder for a TV interview.
The connection between Punto and DeVito is due to the comment of Los Angeles Dodger Skip Schumaker making a joke about Punto having similar qualities to actor Danny DeVito on a television baseball show. This ended up being an ongoing joke during the 2011 baseball season when both Schumaker and Punto were playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
DeVito and Punto finally crossed path on Monday during the Dodgers game. DeVito’s friend Dr. David Kipper let DeVito in on the joke. DeVito had never heard of Nick Punto. But wanting to be a good sport, DeVito agreed to wear the jersey in the seventh inning, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Punto says of the meeting that Danny DeVito was “was coming in for the hug, he’s a good Italian, I know he’s a hugger.” According to the The Inquisitr.
