We likely would never be writing about a band called Day Above Ground if they didn’t unleash one of the most uncomfortable five-minute songs you’ll hear this year - “Asian Girlz.” The song is built on Asian stereotypes and the group has been blasted since it was released. They have defended their work, but even the model in the song is apologizing.

The song surfaced this month and is hard to listen to from the start. In the first verse, the singer praises a girl’s “slanty eyes” and “yellow thighs.” They then proceed to use nearly every Asian stereotype imaginable. Yes, during the fade out, the singer can actually be heard saying “Tofu all over you!”

As Fox News notes, some of the tweets attacking the song include “It hurts how stupid this song is” and “To Day Above Ground, your song ‘Asian Girlz’ song is based on stereotyping Asian females. Racist or not it's terrible #songsucksregardless.”

Gawker has gone ahead and declared it the ‘Most Racist Song’ ever. As the site points out, Levy Tran, who is the model in the video, even apologized for taking part. “I sincerely apologize to all who feels that I set Asian women back 50 yrs. I know I lost respect from a lot of ppl. It wasn't my intention,” she wrote. “It was meant to be light hearted and fun. Satirical. They are sweet boys and not at all racist. That is all I will say. I'm sorry once again.”

But Day Above Ground is taking a different stance, defending the song. According to Complex, they believe the song is not racist. They also can’t understand how anyone could think they are racist because the band is multi-cultural.

This is an actual statement from the band:

This song is us, Day Above Ground, making fun of ourselves (and many, many other guys) obsession with the always lovely, Asian Woman. It pushes this concept to an absurd level, but at the same time is endearing & submissive.. WE ARE NOT RACIST, HAHA! I mean, look at our band, it's multicultural!! The guy in the bow-tie, our cutie bass player, was born in Indonesia, and he steals the show!! Please don't take this tongue-in-cheek tribute to some of the most gorgeous women on the planet too seriously!! You'll ruin the fun of it all!! Thanks for watching, sincerely!!

They later added a better-written statement to the YouTube video, noting, “Our song "Asian Girlz" was not written with any malicious, hateful, or hurtful intent. We know it is racy and does push the boundaries further than other songs out there. Understand that we do not promote or support racism or violence. We love everyone no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation.” They also said that, “We hope that we can continue with our lives with much love and peace.”

The statement doesn’t change the fact that it’s not only an awful song, but racist. You can listen below:
