Now, this is the kind of bizarre story the Discovery Channel needs to make sure it covers during the next Shark Week. A dead sand shark was found on a New York subway train, riding the N train to the Queensboro Plaza station Wednesday morning.

The shark, which was about two feet long, was pictured under the bench on the train and it’s not known how long the shark had been there, notes The Wall Street Journal. A witness who shared photos on Instagram told The Gothamist that it had been there at least since the 34th street stop.

“I boarded an empty car on the N train at the Eighth St. stop and it smelled extremely fishy. I assumed that's why it was empty - until I looked down and saw that poor strap-hanging dead shark,” witness Isvett Verde told the New York Daily News. “I mean, I thought I'd seen it all, but even that was a bit much. I have no idea how it got there or how long it had been there."

The witness said that the moment he stepped onto the train, he was hit with a stench that wasn’t of the “usual urine/trash” variety.

A Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman told the Wall Street Journal that the car with the shark was isolated when it arrived at Queensboro Plaza. When the N train arrived at Ditmars Boulevard, a supervisor “reported the shark was dead and he placed it in a garbage bag and disposed of it in the trash.”

Sand sharks are harmless and have no teeth, so even if it was alive, it wouldn’t have been dangerous. But at least it’s real, not like Megalodon.
