A mentally unstable Army veteran caused chaos Saturday in a Los Angeles, California suburb, leaving himself and one other dead.
Ryan Carnan, 29, shot and killed his mother, 67-year-old Sally Carnan, and then set her house on fire around 5 p.m. Saturday. According to Associated Press, he admitted these crimes right away to his brother, who called police in a panic.
Before police arrived, Carnan fled the scene on a tractor and started shooting at random passersby throughout Simi Valley, California. When the police finally arrived, Carnan fired multiple shots at them, forcing them to shoot back and kill him.
Daily Mail reports that Carnan does not have a criminal record, but does have a history of mental health issues. They are unsure if his mental health issues are related to his military service.
Although a terrifying day for the normally calm town, no one was harmed besides Carnan and his mother. Carnan allegedly came face to face with a few residents of the neighborhood, but did not shoot them.
The bomb squad was called in and residents were told to evacuate their neighborhood.
