Last November, millions of people across America were surprised to find out that Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies, Wonderbread, and Drake’s snack foods, filed for bankruptcy. However, their outrage ended up convincing two investment firms, Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Company, to purchase the brand and begin to bring back favorites, including Twinkies, which were seen back on shelves in July.
However, many are still awaiting the return of famous Drake’s snack foods, which include Drake’s coffee cakes, Yodels, Ring Dings, and Devil Dogs. CNN Money reports that McKee Foods bought the Drake’s snack line earlier this year for $27.5 million.
McKee Foods spokesman Mike Gloekler told CNN Money that the reason getting Drake’s foods back on the shelves is taking so long is because, “The goal is to return to the consumers what they remember, and it takes time to get it done correctly.”
Gleokler added that the company has had focus groups test the new products to make sure that they lived up to the standards set by Drake’s foods. He added, “We’re not going to take a Little Debbie Swiss Roll, and put it in a sleeve and call it a Yodel.”
McKee Foods plans to have the four most popular Drake’s products, Ring Dings, Devil Dogs, Yodels, and Coffee Cake, back on supermarket shelves in mid-September.
