Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, the driver of the train which recently derailed in Spain, reportedly ignored three warnings to slow down in the two minutes before the crash.
Garzon Amo was on the phone with a colleague at the time of the first warning, which takes the form of an audible sound, according to USA Today.
The third and last warning occurred about 300 yards before the dangerous curve, which the train was on when it derailed. The train was going 121 mph despite the 50 mph speed limit for the dangerous area of the track.
Garzon Amo reportedly applied the emergency brakes four seconds after the third warning, but the train had already begun losing contact with the tracks.
In interrogation, he has expressed confusion over what happened in the minutes leading up to the crash, Euro Weekly News reports. After being asked if he thought there was anything wrong with the train or the tracks, he said no, and that he should have been going the proper speed.
The driver has suffered from broken ribs and a head injury, seen in the photo above. Garzon has not officially been charged with killing 79 passengers who died as a result of the crash.
