The Eiffel Tower, one of the most famous landmarks in the world, has reopened after being closed for two hours because of a bomb scare.
SkyNews reports that the Eiffel Tower was closed off to tourists at 2 p.m. local time today. French media was reporting that officials received a call that there was a suspicious package at the tower. They created a safety perimeter around the area and conducted a search.
Thankfully, nothing was found and police decided that it was a hoax. Officials reopened the tower at 4:30 p.m. local time.
According to Reuters, officials at the Eiffel Tower have to put up with bomb scares on a regular basis, but only a few trigger a complete shut down like today’s.
The International Business Times notes that eyewitnesses took to Twitter to report that the army had arrived on scene. One user noted that there was a barricade put up by police to keep tourists away.
The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 and is considered one of the most recognizable and visited landmarks in the world. Made with iron, it stands 1,062 feet (324 meters) high. It draws 7 million visitors a year and averages 30,000 visitors a day during the summer.
