Elizabeth Olsen stars in Therese, an adaptation of the Emile Zola novel Therese Raquin. The film is being screened at the Toronto International Film Festival next weekend and was just acquired by Roadside Attractions.
According to Deadline, Therese was entirely produced and financed by LD Entertainment, which had initially set out to release the film itself. However, on Tuesday, the company struck a deal with Roadside Attractions, which will not distribute the film domestically, working with LD distribution president David Dinerstein.
“We have always loved this script and have been actively tracking Therese since it was being developed,” Roadside Attractions co-president Howard Cohen said in a statement to TheWrap.
The period drama is set in 1860s France, with Olsen playing the title character, a woman trapped in a loveless marriage to her cousin. The rest of the cast includes Oscar Isaac, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange. It was written and directed by Charlie Stratton.
LD and Roadside previously worked together on Glenn Close’s Albert Nobbs and the Javier Bardem-starring Biutiful, two films that landed their lead stars Oscar nominations.
Therese is screening at Toronto on Sept. 7. Roadside did not announce a release date. It could be among the last indies for Olsen before she becomes a blockbuster star, since she’s signed on for 2014’s Godzilla and reportedly in talks for the second Avengers film.
