A Miami man admitted to killing his wife on Facebook and even posted a picture of her bloodied body on the social network. After posting the image, he went to his family and confessed, then turned himself in to police.
Derek Medina was known for sharing his life on social media, notes the Miami Herald. He posted videos on YouTube, shared photos of him playing sports and showed off his tattoos. The 31-year-old South Miami resident even wrote six online books. But on Thursday, what he shared shocked everyone.
“I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife. Love you guys. Miss you guys. Take care. Facebook people you’ll see me in the news,” he wrote on his Facebook wall, attaching a photo of his wife’s body lying on a linoleum floor. The post went viral and was up for hours before police requested that Facebook pull it.
“That is my friend there,” one comment read, notes CNN. Another wrote, “What happened???? derek.”
At noon Thursday, Medina handed himself over to police, admitting that he had shot and killed his 26-year-old wife, Jennifer Alfonso. He said that the two got into a heated argument and she pulled a knife. He tried to get it out of her hands and she punched him. He then shot her “multiple times” and didn’t call 911. Instead, he changed his clothes, visited his family and then went to the police, his arrest affidavit says.
While he didn’t mention a knife on Facebook, Medina did add on his post, “My wife was punching me and I’m not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did. Hope u understand me.”
Alfonso’s 10-year-old daughter, who was upstairs in their house at the time of the killing. Police found her unharmed. Mere hours before, Medina posted a picture of the three together smiling.
Medina has been charged with first degree murder.
