Being Batman is a hard job. Not only do you have to wear an uncomfortable costume for the majority of production, but you also have to deal with the harsh criticism of fans. Ben Affleck probably hasn’t even seen a script yet and he’s already being rejected by fans. But two actors who played Batman are asking fans to give him a chance and offered some advice.

As Entertainment Weekly notes, Adam West, who played Batman during the cheesy 1960s series, shared some advice for Affleck. “Remember Ben, with the cape and cowl comes great responsibility (and lots of heat). Bring deodorant,” he tweeted.

Val Kilmer asked fans to “Give Ben a chance!” Kilmer played Batman in 1996’s Batman Forever, giving a highly criticized portrayal of Bruce Wayne in the panned Joel Schumacher film.

The two didn’t exactly endorse the casting, but Avengers director Joss Whedon did, predicting that the Argo director/actor would “crush it.” You can check out other Twitter reactions here.

Affleck has big shoes to fill, since most fans liked Christian Bale’s performance as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Warner Bros. announced that Affleck had the job for Man of Steel 2 on Thursday and the decision is still a hot topic on the web. But we won’t know how well Affleck will perform in the role until July 17, 2015.
