Former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown’s younger brother was arrested Thursday night in Connecticut. He was heavily armed and is accused of impersonating a police officer.
ABC News reports that Bruce W. Brown, 46, was arrested at Point O Woods Beach in Old Lyme, Conn. and was found wearing a military-style uniform and had allegedly been carrying a loaded 9mm pistol. Local officials say that he “commandeered” a boat and told people he was a member of the Coast Guard. He stopped boaters, asking for their registration and boater safety certificates.
When police discovered him and his car, they found three 9mm handguns. A caller described his car as a “police type vehicle,” since it was a Crown Victoria. Police say he also carried a Transportation Security Agency badge, but they discovered that he wasn’t a member of the Coast Guard or the TSA.
According to WCVB, Wolcott Police Department Chief Edward Stephens said that Brown did say he was the former senator’s brother, but he has an “e” at the end of his last name, which he added “some years ago.”
He was released on $50,000 bond and will be in court on Aug. 22.
Scott Brown did post a statement on Facebook. He wrote that he didn’t have any more information than the public, since Brown is his estranged half brother. “As you many of you know, my mom and my late father were married and divorced 4 times each,” he continued. “Unfortunately, we were not close as a family. These are serious charges and he will need to answer them. I feel badly for his children and I am thankful that no one was injured.”
Scott Brown, a Republican, briefly served in the Senate to fill the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s seat. He lost re-election to Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren last year.
