Army Major Nidal Hassan, who is responsible for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people and injured 31, was sentenced to death by lethal injection Wednesday.
Hassan, an American-born Muslim and former Army psychiatrist, busted into an Army medical readiness center in Fort Hood, Texas in 2009 and shouted “Allahu Akabar”, or “God Is Great”, before opening on fire on unarmed soldiers.
After a 12-day trial in which Hassan barely had any defense, he was convicted of 45 counts of premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder by the jury of 13 retired military officers. He was also officially dismissed from the Army.
Hassan will now be sent to a maximum security U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he will be placed on death row. According to Chicago Tribune, Hassan will most likely be on death row for at least four years while awaiting mandatory appeals since the death penalty is so rarely given in the military.
Hassan says he did it in retaliation of U.S. wars in the Muslim world and seems to have no remorse for his actions.
"He is not now and will never be a martyr. He is a criminal,” said Army prosecutor Col. Michael Mulligan during closing arguments, Associated Press reports. “He is a cold blooded murderer.”
