DeAntre Turman, a high school student from College Park, Georgia, died from a broken neck sustained during preseason football game against a rival high school on Friday, August 16.
Turman, a popular student, collapsed on field after what appeared to be a typical, average tackle.
"He tackled the guy. It was just a hard hit - regular hit that he's made 1,000 times," DeAntre’s uncle, Kenneth Turman, told CBS Atlanta .
Coach Glenn Ford immediately went to help Turman after he collapsed.
"(We were) calling out his name, just trying to get him to come back to open his eyes up to move until the ambulance got there," Ford told local news WSB-TV .
Turman was not breathing very well. An ambulance took him to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
He was a very good player who recently earned a scholarship to University of Kentucky, WSN says.
Turman’s high school plans to make grief counselors available to students, Yahoo News reports.
