J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot are at it again. The director opened up his famous ‘mystery box’ to give us a teaser trailer for something, but he gave no hint as to what it was for. It might not even be for a movie or TV series, since he’s also working on a book.
The minute-long, black and white trailer is titled Stranger and shows a mysterious man falling onto a show, arriving “knowing nothing of himself,” as the narrator says. We see that his hands are bound as he stumbles on the show. Then another man appears (or is it the same man?) with his mouth tied shut.
“Who is he? Soon he will know. Because what begins at the water shall end there. And what ends there shall once more begin. This is what happens: Men become lost; men vanish; men are erased -- and reborn,” the narrator says.
The trailer ends with the text “Soon he will know,” and the words slowly disappear. “Know” goes first, then “he” and “will.” That leaves just “soon” for a few moments.
Abrams has several projects in the works right now that it could be a teaser for, including Star Wars: Episode VII and the NBC series Believe with Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron.
However, as CBS News notes, Abrams is also working on a book simply titled S and co-written by Doug Dorst. Mulholland Books is releasing the book in October and some speculate that the teaser has to do with that.
So what do you think the teaser is for?
