Jared W. Remy, the son of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, has been charged with killing his girlfriend of seven years in Waltham, Massachusetts. The couple also had a four-year-old daughter together.
WBZ-TV reports that Remy, 34, was charged with murder and battery in the death of Jennifer Martel, 27. He entered a not guilty plea in Waltham District Court and is being held without bail.
Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern described to the judge how Remy allegedly brutally killed Martel by stabbing her several times on the floor of the patio after attacking her in their home, reports Boston.com. A neighbor arrived at the scene and when she tried to pull Remy from Martel, Remy slashed at her.
“Great force and great effort was made by this defendant in stabbing Miss Martel over and over and over again” during a “protracted struggle” in the kitchen, McGovern said, before they reached the patio. When they reached that point, eyewitnesses say they saw Remy “on top of Miss Martel stabbing her repeatedly with the knife.”
Police responded at 9 p.m. Thursday night and had received several 911 calls.
Boston.com notes that Remy had just been in court earlier this week. On Tuesday, he allegedly pushed Martel into a window and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge. He was released Wednesday on personal recognizance.
A representative for Jerry Remy, who played for the Red Sox and is a commentator for the games on NESN, tweeted, “It's John. It's difficult to comment after the news this AM. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Martel family.”
“This morning, we learned of a terrible tragedy. All of us at NESN and the Red Sox, along with Jerry Remy, are filled with grief for everyone involved, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Jennifer Martel,” NESN said in a statement.
Remy had briefly worked for the Red Sox’ security, but was fired in 2008 when he and another staffer were linked to steroid use, the Boston Globe reported in 2009.
