John Mayer is opening up about his relationship with Katy Perry in a new interview, saying he isn’t running from her anymore.

While promoting his new album Paradise Valley, his first since getting throat surgery, he talked about his duet with Perry “Who You Love.”

"When you first read the reports about [the duet], you'll think that it's a gimmick ... I love a good challenge and that's certainly one," he told Billboard. "But the hope is you hear it once because of the curiosity and then you go, 'Wow, I really like that. I could find a place for hearing that a lot more.'"

He called the song a “confessional,” saying "I kicked around this song about you love who you love. It's also a confessional for myself. I started singing [the song], ‘My girl, she ain't the one I saw coming and sometimes I don't know which way to go and I tried to run before, but I'm not running anymore.’ I tried to be alone and I can't,” ABC News reports.

Mayer made his return to the stage this summer for the first time since 2010. It took him a while to recover throat surgery and he has previously stated there were moments he wondered if he would ever be able to tour again.

He said about his career and his measure of success, “Think about how elevated the expectation is now for success-is it a million views of something? That's a lot of views. Is it 10 million views? Is it 30 million views? For me now, it's how many people are at a show."
