2000s teen singing sensation JoJo is suing her record label Blackground Records because the company and its subsidiary, Da Family, are refusing to allow the artist to release her first album in seven years.

The “Too Little, Too Late” singer is suing the label in order to get out of her extended contract, according to The Hollywood Reporter . JoJo is battling Blackground Records on the basis that the company failed to release her third album, breaching the stipulations of her contract. The 22-year-old’s legal team argues that she should therefore be let go from the contract.

The complaint from the popstar’s attorneys reads that JoJo has been “dissatisfied with her professional relationship with the Da Family Entities and Blackground for many years.”

“By claiming that the recording contract remains in full force and effect,” says the complaint, the young singer has suffered “irreparable damage to her professional career.”

The Huffington Post reports that the “Baby It’s You” crooner believes she “does not owe any further artist services under her 2003 recording contract with Da Family and Blackground Records,” as declared in a statement published by her camp.

“JoJo, whose full name is Joanna Levesque, seeks legal confirmation that she is free to sign with a new record label of her choice and exercise full control over the direction of her career,” the statement reads.
