In one of those increasingly all too common cases of E.coli contamination, the Kansas plant National Beef Co. recalled more than 50,000 pounds of ground beef on Wednesday.
The FDA announced the company’s press release yesterday, which states that the products were produced and shipped last Sunday, July 18, but the E.coli O157:H7 contamination was not discovered by the Food Service Inspection Service (FSIS) until a routine inspection more than a week later.
This is not the first recall this company has issued, having recalled more than 22,000 pounds of ground meat as recently as this past June, reports CNN.
Mayo Clinic lists the symptoms of this E.coli strain as consisting of vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea. Most recover from exposure to the bacteria, but it can also lead to a potentially fatal form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), especially in children and older adults.
Thus far, there have been no reported illnesses due to the contamination.
