Katy Perry’s new single “Roar” off her upcoming album “Prism” doesn’t hold back any punches, singing to the world that she’s back and better than ever.
Even though the new single “Roar” was supposed to land on Monday at midnight, Katy Perry didn’t bat an eye when the song leaked two days early. She stated on her Twitter “Looks like there’s a tiger on the loose!!!” playfully taking the leak in stride. “Roar” reflects this easygoing attitude, and a new breath for Katy Perry after her very public divorce from Russell Brand. “I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath/scared to rock the boat and make a mess” the song starts stating throughout that she isn’t going to be held back anymore, and she has rediscovered the love for herself as a person again. “You held me down but I got up/get ready cause I’ve had enough” leading to the chorus “Cause I am a champion and you’re going to hear me ROAR!” might be more reminiscent of a Kelly Clarkson-like, I’m-a-powerful-woman song (not too surprising considering Katy Perry helped pen two of her hits off “All I Ever Wanted”) but I think that this the type of song we want to hear from Katy.
Could this possibly be a more straightforward album like “One of The Boys”, rather than the, yes, good, but filled with fluffy songs like “Teenage Dream”? Maybe. “Roar” is definitely a step in the right direction toward the former. Hopefully this is just the beginning of singles being released but we may just have to wait and see what direction the album goes until “Prism” is released on October 22nd.
