Even though both new singles from pop singers Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have not been out for a week yet, they both managed to chart early on Billboard. On Thursday, Perry's "Roar" debuted on the Hot 100 while Gaga's "Applause" started on the dance chart.
Both singers experienced song leaks which caused them to rush release their singles in the same week. Perry's empowering "Roar" arrived a few days early while Gaga's fiery dance track, "Applause," premiered a week ahead of release. The media and fans have since pitted the singers against each other.
With four days of big radio airplay under its belt, Perry's "Roar" debuted at no. 85 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart, Billboard reported.
Gaga's "Applause," on the other hand, barely missed the Hot 100 but was able to snag a no. 16 debut on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Her single arrived two days after Perry's so only that amount of airplay was accounted for on this week's chart. Both bows are impressive, though, since the songs hadn't been out for a full week yet.
Things should really heat up on next week's Billboard Hot 100 chart when a full week of radio airplay, downloads, YouTube streams, and other factors will be applied to Gaga and Perry's singles. Both "Applause" and "Roar" are expected to breakthrough the top five.
"Roar" is the first single from Perry's new album Prism, which is due out on October 22. Lady Gaga's "Applause" is the first offering from her album ARPTOP. That album will drop on November 11.
