A five-year-old kindergartner brought a gun to school on Thursday and it accidentally fired. The boy could be expelled, but police said that they will not charge him.
The Shelby County Board of Education confirmed that the incident took place at a school in Memphis Thursday, reports CNN. The gun was in his backpack and went off in the cafeteria as the students waited for the opening bell. Staff took the gun and his backpack and law enforcement did arrive. No one was hurt and the school day went on as scheduled.
According to The Associated Press, police released the boy and his mother late Thursday. On Friday, spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said that the attorney general’s office has decided not to file charges.
However, the Commercial Appeal is reporting that the boy may be expelled. “Per state and board policy, the student has been recommended for expulsion,” SCS spokesman Christian Ross stated.
Authorities found that the boy found the gun in a closet and took it with him to school. They did not release the boy's identity.
