Kirsten Dunst has joined the new project from Mud director Jeff Nichols, currently titled Midnight Special. The project already includes Nichols’ Take Shelter star Michael Shannon.

According to Deadline, the film is set up at Warner Bros. The film will also star Joel Edgerton, the star of Warrior. His profile has definitely been on the rise since he starred in Zero Dark Thirty and The Great Gatsby. He’s currently working on Jane Got A Gun with Natalie Portman.

Variety reports that Midnight Special was written by Nichols and centers on a father whose eight-year-old son has supernatural powers. The two go on the run, trying to escape their enemies.

Producers include Sarah Green and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, while the executive producers are Christos V. Konstantakopoulos.

While Dunst may still be known by many for her role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, she has taken on more prestige projects as of late, earning critical acclaim for her role in Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia in 2011. She’s also recently appeared in Bachelorette and On The Road. She stars in The Two Faces of January with Viggo Mortensen.

As for writer/director Nicholas, he won acclaim for 2011’s Take Shelter and his Mud with Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon was also well received by critics.
