Nicola Formichetti has stepped down as Lady Gaga’s stylist, and with reason.

“She changes 12 times a day,” the designer-stylist told Women’s Wear Daily in a recent interview. “It’s insane.”

Formichetti, who was behind several of Gaga’s many memorable looks, including the meat dress she donned at the 2010 Video Music Awards, is instead channeling his creative talents into Uniqlo and Diesel, where he was recently appointed artistic director. However he makes clear that this split from the “Born This Way” singer is an amicable one.

“She’s going to be my BFF forever, but my ex-assistant Brandon [Maxwell] is heading that project,” the 36-year-old said. “I’m too busy with [other commitments]. I’ve done two albums with her, it’s been like five years, and you know, I’m always going to be involved somehow, but I cannot do it every day.”

“I live between Europe, America and Asia,” he continued. “I’ve terminated my other jobs to concentrate on Uniqlo, and…I still have time to do lots of other things.”

This split comes at the eve of Gaga’s new album release. ARTPOP is being called a multimedia “project” that surpasses a simple musical collection, Gaga told WWD in a recent profile.

“The point [of ARTPOP] is that art and pop can have an exchange,” she said. “[I’m not] defined by the same designer or defined by the same hair cut or defined by the same icon. The statement is that I’m not one icon, I’m every icon.”

Here’s to hoping Maxwell’s sartorial selections are just as memorable as his former boss’.
