Logan Stevenson, a two-year-old boy who had leukemia and served as his parents’ best man at their wedding Saturday, has died.
Logan’s story first drew attention after the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review did a report on him and his parents, Christine Swidorsky and Sean Stevenson, who decided to reschedule their wedding for Saturday after learning that Logan only had weeks to live. According to The Tribune-Review, the couple had planned to marry in July 2014, but decided that they needed to have Logan play a role in their wedding.
The couple used the wedding to celebrate Logan’s short life, which had already included several tests of strength. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, had a kidney removed and a stem cell transplant. He had Fanconi anemia, which often leads to cancer and in July, they learned he had a cancerous mass in his last kidney. Doctors then said on July 26 that he’d have days to live.
Pictures of the wedding circulated on the web. It was a short, 12-minute ceremony. “It's just going to be one of those things that you remember all your life,” Stevenson told the Tribune-Review. “It means the world to me. We're just blessed every day that he's here with us.”
According to The Associated Press, Logan died Monday night, his mother wrote on Facebook. A spokeswoman for the family later told the AP, “Logan passed away at 8:18 yesterday evening, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was very comfortable.”
“He is with angels and he's in no more pain,” his mother wrote on Facebook. “Sean and I held him all day he was comfortable with his medication then at 8:18 my son took his last breath in my arms.” The family also thanked everyone for their support, writing, “We love all of u for all your prayers thank u all for caring god bless u all! And most of all god bless Logan I'll c u in my dreams my son.”
