Lamont Grant, the 34-year-old man who opened fire in a Chicago neighborhood Saturday night, turned himself in to police Wednesday morning.
At 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Grant, who lives on the block, shot 54-year-old Ralph McNeal in the back. He was rushed to John H. Stroger Hospital in Clark County, but died shortly after. A 26-year-old man also suffered multiple shot wounds and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he is in serious condition.
According to Chicago Tribune Grant’s family contacted Reverend Corey Brooks, a South Side pastor at New Beginnings Church, Tuesday night and asked for his assistance in turning Grant in to police.
Grant was cooperative and spent several hours talking to Brooks. They prayed together, met with Grant’s relatives, and had a meal before going to the police station early Wednesday morning. Grant also asked Brooks to deliver a message to McNeal’s family, the man he killed.
Grant told Brooks that he is schizophrenic and bipolar, and could not find his medication over the weekend. Meredetise Wilson, McNeal’s sister, does not believe this is an excuse.
"He killed my brother, and I'm glad he turned himself in. And all this schizophrenic bipolar stuff -- he wasn't that crazy to get that gun and go down there. He knew who he was looking for," said Wilson, ABC reports. "I want to make sure they put him away. My brother's gone for life. He's going to be gone for life.”
Grant has been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of aggravated battery with firearm.
