Derek Medina, who murdered his wife and then posted pictures of her dead body and a confession to Facebook Thursday, has admitted to detectives that he shot her 6-8 times. A newly released search warrant shows he admitted this, among other gruesome details, to detectives.
Medina, 31, was having an argument with his 26-year-old wife Jennifer Alfonso when he took out his Bersa Thunder .380-caliber pistol after she allegedly grabbed a knife and tried to leave the house. The couple met and married in 2010, before divorcing soon after and re-marrying again.
Friends and family of the couple say different things about who the abuser was in the relationship, but it is clear that they had a rocky marriage. According to NY Daily News, Medina claimed he murdered her because she abused him and he could not take it anymore, but her family and friends say otherwise.
Since it did not appear that Alfonso fought back a lot and since Medina shot her so many times, it will likely be hard for his attorneys to use self-defense as his motive.
Miami Herald reports that the same search warrant asked permission to use electronic evidence against Medina in trial, including the Facebook photo and confession he posted.
Alfonso’s 10-year-old daughter was upstairs at the time of the murder, but was left unharmed. After walking into a police station and turning himself in Thursday, Medina has been housed in a psychiatric ward before his arraignment in 21 days for the charge of first-degree murder.
