Missouri Attorney Chris Koster is taking on Walgreen’s, claiming that the company overcharged customers and engaged in false advertising.
According to KMOV, Koster filed a civil suit against the national pharmacy chain in Jackson Court Tuesday, claiming that there are wide examples of Walgreen’s charging prices higher than advertized in his state. He said that he had members of his office visit locations in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and other cities over the past two months. Koster claims that they were overcharged on 21 percent of the 205 items purchased.
Koster’s suit also claims that Walgreen’s rewards program does not always lower prices when the customer's items are scanned. Sales tags are also left on shelves after the expiration date and prices on display are often lower than what the register says, the suit alleges.
“Consumers have a right to expect the price they will pay at the register is the same as the price displayed on the shelf. Consumers should not have to double-check the price tags or signage and compare them to the prices charged at the register,” Koster said.
According to The Associated Press, Walgreen’s spokesman Jim Graham did not comment on the suit, saying that they have not seen in yet. Walgreen’s is based in Chicago.
