In honor of all the hot music to emerge this summer, MTV added a new category to its upcoming Video Music Awards ceremony. On Tuesday, MTV unveiled its Best Song of the Summer, which features music from One Direction, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk and Robin Thicke.

MTV announced the Best Song of the Summer award to settle the topic once and for all. Every song listed has, at one point, been touted as song of the summer so it will be exciting to see which one takes home the fan-voted honor.

U.K. pop group One Direction were originally shut out of this year's MTV Video Music Awards with zero nominations. Their massive fan base have a reason to tune in now with the guys up for Best Song of the Summer for "Best Song Ever." The amped-up pop-rock tune might not have been the best song ever, but it surely was an exciting release from One Direction. The music video was even better with each of the guys hilariously taking on the persona of different music executives.

Miley Cyrus' Video Music Award nominations were upped by one in the Best Song of the Summer category. Her woozy club track, "We Can't Stop," marked her return to music after 2010's Can't Be Tamed album. The song can accurately be described as a song of the summer with its long stay in the top five of Billboard's Hot 100. The strange party music video that accompanied "We Can't Stop" made it all the more memorable.

Another former Disney starlet, Selena Gomez, is up for the award with her song "Come & Get It." The Indian music-inspired pop track was another big hit this past summer when it peaked in the top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100. The music video sees Gomez looking beautiful in a serene scene when she isn't busting some slick dance moves.

If any song were gauged to be song of the summer through Billboard, it would surely be Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines." His cooky pop track with Pharrell and T.I. is currently spending its tenth week atop the Hot 100 chart. The song became infamous this summer with its NSFW video which featured Thicke and a slew of topless models.

Pharrell also featured this year on Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." The disco-tinged song became the French duo's biggest hit in the U.S. so far. They did it all without a music video too.

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris found more success this summer with his single, "I Need Your Love," featuring U.K. songbird Ellie Goulding. His house music sound perfectly accompanied Goulding's call for love. The music video featured the two getting cozy on camera.
