South African president Jacob Zuma’s office said today that Nelson Mandela is still in the hospital, despite reports suggesting that the 95-year-old was released.
According to CNN, which cited two sources, the Nobel laureate had been released from the hospital. Other news organizations also reported this.
However, in statement, Zuma’s office discredited these reports, claiming that Mandela, who is known by his clan name Madiba, is still in critical but stable condition.
“The Presidency has noted incorrect media reports that former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital,” the statement reads. “Madiba is still in hospital in Pretoria, and remains in a critical but stable condition. At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions.”
Mandela has been in the hospital since June 8 for a lung infection. He developed lung problems while he was imprisoned for 27 years as he fought apartheid in South Africa. After his release and the end of apartheid, he was elected the country’s first black president in 1994. He celebrated his birthday last month in the hospital.
Earlier this week, Zuma gave an update on Mandela’s health while giving a speech on his behalf. He again stated that Mandela is in critical but stable condition.
